How to Engage in Weekend Worship

We live in a world with so many options. Any given weekend, we have countless options for how to spend our time. We can sleep in, make breakfast, go to the lake, take our kids to sporting events, or scroll our feed. Christians have options too. We can also sleep in, make breakfast, go to sporting events, or scroll our feeds. Or, we can go to church.1

Gathering with other believers on Sunday is what Christians have done for almost two thousand years to celebrate Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. Gathering on the weekends is one of the primary ways Christians worship together in order to know, love, and obey God above all else.

When you attend The Summit Church on the weekend, we want to help set your expectations not only for what you will experience, but also for how to make the most out of the gathering.

An Invitation to Worship God

Psalm 34:3 says, “Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!” (ESV)

Magnify. Exalt. These are commands and invitations to worship the Lord. Every time we gather, we do so as active participants in the worship of God. We not only hear or observe the prayers and Bible reading, but we participate in them by praying, reading, and singing.

This weekend, you are not only invited by us, but by God himself, to magnify the Lord with his church. God invited you to worship by sending his Son to live the life you could never live, to die the death that you deserved, and to rise from the grave to give you life eternal. Now, your right response to this gospel is to join God’s people in reading his Word, singing songs of praise, praying to him, and participating in baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

An Invitation to Worship God Together

“With me” and “together” are invitations to a corporate gathering. We gather to worship God by reading his Word, praying to him, singing to him, and participating in baptism and the Lord’s Supper together. This is not simply an individual activity. Sure, you can read, pray, and sing at home or in private. What makes the weekend gathering different is that we do it with one another. When Jesus saved us, he welcomed us into a family. He invites us to a family reunion with countless others, and the weekend service is a time to worship together.

This weekend, you are invited into an experience that has been taking place for thousands of years all around the world. Would you join us? As you do, here are a few practical tips for how to engage:

  • Arrive early. Who likes to be rushed?
  • Turn off your phone. Who likes to be distracted?
  • Bring your Bible. Read and follow along.
  • Bring a notebook. Take notes so you can remember what you learned.
  • Make friends. Engage with the people around you.2
  • Sing. Use your voice to worship God and encourage one another.
  • Pray. Actively engage in the prayer times.
  • Come back next weekend!

We hope to see you at one of our campus locations this weekend as we worship God together.

1 We understand that some may be providentially hindered from gathering every weekend due to various reasons, and we share in the grief and frustration that can bring to those experiencing such hindrances. Even still, the general expectation for Christians is to consistently participate in the church’s weekly gathering.
