How to Give the Firstfruits of Your Finances

God has given us everything we have, and he owns everything. So we bring back to him the firstfruits of our finances, through which he accomplishes his purposes in and through us. But if you’ve never financially given back to God, the first step can feel challenging. We’ve provided some practical steps to help you start giving from a heart filled with loving obedience to God.

  1. Love God and trust him. Our giving begins with loving and trusting God. Before we look at our bank accounts, we must remember the One to whom we give. We remember that he gave eternal and abundant life to us by sending his only Son to live the life we could never live, die the death we deserved, and resurrect to give us new life. The gospel shows us that God can be trusted with everything, even our finances—so we should start there.
  2. Give. Giving can feel overwhelming, but honestly, it’s simple. You just give. God instructs us to bring him our first and best from every paycheck (1 Corinthians 16:2), even when we don’t understand exactly how it will work out. Giving is always an act of faith in God. We never fully know how it will work out—that’s why it requires faith! If you’re not sure how much to give, just start somewhere. However, throughout Scripture, we see the tithe (10 percent of your gross income) as the starting point for our generosity.
  3. Assess where your money is going. To facilitate a lifetime of faithful stewardship, you have to know what money you have coming in (income) and where it goes out (expenses). You need a budget. If you’ve never developed a budget before, you can use a tool like YNAB or Aspire to track your income and expenses.
  4. Find ways to grow your margin. If your expenses are equal to or more than your income, you must identify how to reduce your expenses and create financial margin. Start by identifying your needs, wants, and priorities. Then, explore opportunities to reduce your spending on your wants and needs. Can you eat out less? Can you cancel some of your entertainment subscriptions? Are there luxuries you can cut out? If you need more help, you can find other stewardship resources here.
  5. Commit and give regularly. A faithful steward’s life is marked by intentional generosity. Commit to give in proportion to what the Lord has entrusted you with. Intentions and planning will only get you so far. At some point, you just have to act. Setting up recurring giving is a great way to prioritize keeping God first in your finances.
  6. Trust God and see his faithfulness. Bringing back to God the firstfruits of our finances can leave us feeling uneasy. So after we give, it’s good to remind ourselves that God loves us, and we can trust him to care for us (Matthew 6:25–34). Then, we get the joy of seeing God show himself faithful to us.
