For many, 2020 has been a year of up-and-downs. As political uncertainty and social unrest magnify the effects of a global pandemic, it would be easy, or almost natural, to lose faith. But Thom and Sue know that God is in control. No matter the circumstance, the answer is always the same – pray and he will be faithful.

This year, Thom and Sue felt led by the Lord to increase their giving to the kingdom of God by 50 percent in anticipation of receiving a monthly payment from the sale of their longtime business. It was an ambitious goal, but one that they had prayed about and felt comfortable with, even though it was a stretch. That money has yet to arrive.

“After the first three months there was a little discouragement,” Thom said. “But we reminded each other of God's faithfulness.”

As the daughter of a Baptist minister, Sue had seen God work time and time again. From the strength of her parents, to the transformation of Thom’s life through prayer , she knew that no struggle was too big and no problem too great. God would be there when they needed him most.

Thom and Sue continued to walk by faith, giving the increased amount each month while cutting other expenses to balance their budget. It was difficult, but not impossible. They knew they needed to be patient and trust in God’s timing. He is just, and his will would prevail.

In July, their financial advisor called to let them know that one of their investments had grown more than expected – almost twice what they anticipated from the monthly payments. The call itself was unexpected. Thom and Sue were blown away but not surprised.

“God told us to test him on this,” Thom said. “He’s given us very firm confidence that those payments will be coming at some point. We are living by his schedule.”

Until then, Thom and Sue don’t plan to touch the investment. Despite the uncertainty of the situation and the changes brought by COVID-19, they find comfort in the promises of 1 Peter 5:6-7.

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you,” Thom said. It’s a section they both committed to memory.

“God spoke the same message to both of us,” Thom said. “The reason for the withheld payments is as illogical as anyone can imagine, which can make this waiting aggravating. But we've been blessed with his assurance.”
